Avengers #210

You Don’t Need the Weathermen to Know Which Way the Wind Blows!

Credits

With weather going crazy all over the world, the Avengers have called an emergency meeting. There are tornados in Kansas, flooding in London, freak blizzards in Buenos Aires, and extreme heat is causing the polar ice in Antarctica to melt. The team is relayed this information from Samarobryn, a new weather satellite that was previously launched. Captain America quickly splits up the team so they can investigate the disasters in each area. Jocasta is ignored and she is left behind. Trying to find some way to help, she is present when Beast’s inquiry into the origins of Samarobryn’s name. She learns that it was named after one of the prophesies of Nostradamus, who foretold numerous disasters that would plague the entire world.

While the other Avengers take off in Quinjets, Thor remains in New York City to try and quell the powerful thunderstorms that have formed in the region. As he tries to do so, he is attacked by an armored man on a hoverboard who can control lighting who calls himself the Weatherman. In England, Iron Man and Captain America helps Londoners caught in the flooding where they too are attacked by another Weatherman, this one who can control water. The same happens to each team of Avengers in each part of the world. In Antarctica, Wonder Man and the Wasp face a Weatherman who can fire rays of searing heat. While in Kansas, the Scarlet Witch and Vision face off against a wind powered Weatherman. Lastly, the Beast tries to battle a Weatherman in Buenos Aires armed with a freeze ray.

Meanwhile, Jocasta pilots a Quinjet into orbit and enters the Samarobryn weather satellite. There she discovers that the satellite is operated by an artificial intelligence. It explains to her that its creator also programmed the prophesies of Nostradamus into its code. Taking this to mean that it was to create the disasters foretold by the ancient prophet, Samarobryn used its power to brainwash the crew of the satellite and turn them into his harbingers of doom, the Weathermen. The computer then offers Jocasta to rule the Earth by its side. Having rejected being a bride to Ultron, Jocasta refuses to side with Samarobryn and tries to destroy the computer.[1]

As it is focused on trying to stop Jocasta from destroying it, the computer loses control of its Weathermen and they are quickly defeated by the Avengers. While dissipating the thunder storms over New York, Thor ends up shooting a bolt of lightning into the sky which strikes Samarobryn, frying its computer systems and brining its threat to an end.

When all of the Avengers return to the mansion, Captain America realizes that they just narrowly avoided total catastrophe and decides that it is time to consider recruiting new members on to the team.
