Avenging Spider-Man #10

Captain Marvel and Spider-Man were on their way to Boston when they suddenly got involved with a mystery woman named Robyn Hood. Robyn had just robbed a bank and is now hunted by the authorities and the high tech mercenaries of Blackbird Security who are on loan to the city.

While trying to diffuse the situation on the Zakim Bridge, Robyn was shot by one of the mercenaries prompting her to suddenly grow 50 feet tall. While Captain Marvel argues with the Blackbird officials, Spider-Man is the only one paying attention to Robyn. Suddenly, the young woman begins attacking the members of Blackbird that are in the air. Spider-Man tries to restrain her with a web-line but gets yanked in the air.

Captain Marvel quickly comes to Spider-Man’s aid. Unfortunately, when she blasts Robyn it causes the young woman to grow even larger. This makes her too heavy for her jet pack to carry her and Robyn ends up crashing onto the bridge below. As EMTs arrive on the scene, both Captain Marvel and Spider-Man fear for the young woman’s health since her enhanced size is applying too much pressure on her spine.

That’s when Frank Larrkin, general council for the National Federal Bank arrives and tells them that the RG-O26 is their property and it can’t be seized without a warrant. As Captain Marvel argues with Frank about how a girl can’t be property, Spider-Man checks on Robyn. That’s when the girl begins getting up. Before anyone can open fire, Spider-Man orders everyone to stand down because another shot could cause Robyn is about to explode. This starts another argument over jurisdiction and what to do, but ultimately, Captain Marvel convinces the Blackbird operatives to contact the mayor’s office to begin evacuation protocols.

Captain Marvel then tries to get answers from Larrkin how to end this current crisis, but he is still entirely defensive over his property. They are soon joined by Shelley Goodwin. She created Robyn and explains that the girl is actually an experimental artificial intelligence that was created out of biological components and mutated DNA. Larry tries to silence her with threats of legal action, but she is not afraid of his threats particularly since he had recently fired her. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is trying to convince Robyn to take off her jet pack since that is the part of her that will explode and take out the whole city. Confused by the situation, Robyn suggests they go for a walk and picks up Spider-Man and heads into the city.

On the ground, Shelley tries to regain control of her creation through her laptop. Captain Marvel picks her up and takes her closer to Robyn. Along the way, Shelley reveals that Robyn shouldn’t have had a jetpack to begin with. As they head toward Robyn, they discover that she has stopped atop the bank, leading Captain Marvel to theorize that she is wants to destroy it. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is trying to convince Robyn to do the right thing and spare the city destruction. He tries to appeal to her sense of justice while also pointing out the history of Boston. This causes Robyn to laugh but her message gets through just as Captain Marvel arrives. With no time left, Robyn asks the Captain to toss her in the air. On the ground, Shelly tries in vein to shut down the jetpack from her laptop but nothing she tries work. Luckily, Captain Marvel tosses Robyn high enough up into the air that the girl explodes harmlessly.

A week later, back in New York, Peter Parker visits Carol Danvers at the hanger where she is busy repairing her plane after their battle in Boston. The pair have an awkward moment when she refers to her plane as just a machine, and she apologizes to him after what happened to Robyn. Peter understands and he is then pressured to finally tell her something that he hasn’t told anyone else. Peter is embarrassed but whispers it in her ear. What he tells her is a surprise as she didn’t expect it. As Peter turns to leave, Carol offers him a lift the next time he decides to head out to Boston.

Meanwhile, Shelly Goodwin has just settled in at her new job at Future Flora Robotics. After her boss checks to see how she’s doing, Shelly gets back to work on her laptop where she managed to back-up Robyn’s personality. When she asks Robyn if she knows who she is, Shelly is pleased when the AI refers to Shelly as its mother.
