Captain America #240

Gang Wars!

Credits

Captain America comes to the rescue of an old man who is being attacked by a gang of thugs outside of the Coney Island amusement park. After he drives away the attackers, the old man — Jacob Kirsch — thanks Cap for his help. Kirsch is the last tenant who lives in a run down building nearby. He explains that he has lived there for years and after his wife died and everyone else left, he continued to live there because he had nowhere else to go. He had lived in peace until the local gang decided to use the abandoned building for criminal activity and have been trying to get him to leave. Captain America vows to deal with the gang so they leave Kirsch alone.

Captain America then goes down to Duffy’s Bar and Grill where the gang hangs out and warns their leader, a guy named Bobo, to leave Jacob Kirsch in peace. Naturally, a fight breaks out and the gang is easily trounced by Captain America. Questioning Bobo, he learns that the real leader of the gang is a guy called Big Thunder, who wants to the space because he is working out a deal with the mob. Bobo takes Cap to their hideout in the closed up Penny Arcade at Coney Island. There he beats up more of the gang and faces Big Thunder, who challenges Captain America to a duel. If Cap wins, Kirsch will be left alone.

Captain America agrees and the two begin brawling it out. Big Thunder is plenty strong and the fight takes them across the entire amusement park. When the battle reaches the parachute jump, Captain America swings on a rope up to Kirsch’s apartment and saves him from a pair of mobsters. When Big Thunder catches up to him, Cap knocks him out with a single punch. With Big Thunder defeated the mobsters realize that securing the property is too much trouble and leave. With the battle over, Captain America decides to help Jacob find a more suitable home instead of staying in the run down building.
