Duke O’Dowd

Duke O’Dowd, an adventure seeker from Texas, has just joined up with the French Foreign Legion. While his happy-go-lucky nature has made him many friends, he has also made one enemy — a soldier named Karl Von Hond, the bully of the unit. In the mess hall Karl trips Duke and the two come to blows. This fight is quickly broken up by the commanding officer who decides that the two men should settle their differences that evening on the parade grounds. That evening, the pair engage in a fist fight which Duke ultimately wins. Humiliated by this defeat, Karl vows to get revenge against the American.

Soon, Duke’s battalion is deployed to the town of Gordovo. After a long day of patrol. Duke and the others relax in a bar. While Duke dances to the music, Karl Von Hond convinces one of the locals to pick a fight with O’Dowd. Duke manages to fight his way out of the brawl and is lured away by a young woman who offers to help him get away. However, she really lures him into a locked room. He is then doused with whiskey from overhead and told he will be freed in the morning. Not wanting to be reported AWOL, Duke manages to break out of his prison and overhears that this was all a scheme of Karl Van Hond to get Duke arrested. Getting the drop on Karl and his allies, Duke quickly disarms them and ties them up and reports Karl to his superiors. For rooting out a traitor in their midsts, Duke is commended by his commanding officer.
