Combat Casey Primer

Series Overview

After his first appearance in War Combat #5, Combat Casey was given his own series. His series replaced the very series that he first appeared in, continuing numbering from that series starting with issue #6. The series was like other war comics of the time. It focused entirely on Combat Casey and his buddy Penny Pennington. There were commanding officers who were either complete assholes or incompetent in order to play up laughs. Recurring villains were usually female spies that were part of the North Koran army that had names that took inspiration from Tokyo Rose. This series also had a rare crossover with other wartime hero, Battle Brady, in issue #10.

The series mostly focused on stories that took place during the Korean War but expanded to telling stories about Combat Casey that took place during World War II. Although mostly devoted to stories about Combat Casey, this series also included one-off wartime stories. Later these stories took place during the first World War and were narrated by Combat Casey. Penny Pennington also appeared in solo stories in the title, but these were eventually turned into educational features where Penny taught the reader about different military techniques.

Although the character has not been seen since the series ended, Combat Casey’s adventures are considered part of Marvel continuity as pointed out in the profile on Korea in Marvel Atlas #1.

Like other items in this index, I’m omitting one-off war stories and educational pieces (even ones narrated by Combat Casey and Penny Pennington) you can read up on those on your own time.
