Credits

The Flat of the Land

The Human Torch and Sun Girl are spending their day relaxing by watching a baseball game on TV. Suddenly to the surprise of everyone viewing the game, one of the balls being pitched suddenly turns flat. Then, the broadcast is interrupted by a special news bulletin announcing that the President has disappeared. The Torch and Sun Girl rush to the White House where a security guard tells them that the President was addressing the public when he suddenly became flat and then vanished. Shortly thereafter there is a wave of sudden strange disappearances: The images from film reels disappear, a bank truck suddenly turns flat, books flutter out of a bookstore, and some actors suddenly turn flat and disappear on the set of a movie.

Realizing what is going on, the Torch grabs Sun Girl and travels to Philadelphia where they witness the words on the Declaration of Independence disappear. Just then the Liberty Bell loses it's dimensions as well, but before it can disappear the Torch and Sun Girl grab it. They also are turned flat and find themselves transported to a 2-dimensional world. When they land on the ground they are suddenly attacked by the 2-dimensional locals that live there. There they force the two heroes to do their bidding or be destroyed by their ray guns. They are dragged to the leader of the 2-dimensional world, a being named B4. B4 takes them by car to a zoo where they have put everything they have stolen from the 3-dimensional world to be put on display, explaining that this was their goal.

The Torch finally flames on, and since fire is 3-dimensional and immune to the effects of that dimension, he and Sun Girl are restored to normal. They then fly around the dimension of Flatula and begin lighting things on fire. They then free all the captives and return them to their home dimension. Unwilling to give up, B4 transport the Torch and Sun Girl back to his dimension and convert them into 2-dimensional beings again. However the Torch flames on once more, grabs B4 and returns with Sun Girl back to the third dimension, with B4 as their prisoner the people of Flatula cannot capture anyone again.

They All Died Laughing

Mark Funny, a comedian, is the guest at a rich party and his laughter has put the people into such a trance that they are completely unaware that some crooks have crashed the party and robbed them blind. When Funny's set is over, the party goers realize that they have been robbed. Not wishing any bad publicity, the host calls his friend the Human Torch who soon arrives with his sidekick Sun Girl. They question all the party guests and learn what happened. As they leave, they both note that the only one not robbed was Mark Funny, but this does not prove he had anything to do with it, but they decide to follow him anyway.

However, the Torch's hunch proves correct as Funny soon arrives at his apartment, the hideout of the men who robbed the party. There Mark uses his hypnotic comedy to enthral the thugs and steal all the loot for himself. He exits his apartment just as the Torch and Sun Girl arrive and seemingly falls out a window trying to flee them. But when they look outside they find a safety net that Funny used to safely land and flee the scene.

The Torch then decides to begin looking into Funny's background. At the library they find an old newspaper article about how Funny used to be a successful comedian who eventually fell on hard times at Club El Rocko and eventually went broke. He was later taken in by another comedian named Hugh Haller. The pair pay Haller a visit, and he tells them that he hasn't seen Mark since he got back on his feet and moved out. With no other avenues, the Torch decides to wait until Mark strikes again. Funny meanwhile has begun targeting elderly men and making them laugh to death, and then robs them.

After a number of successful attempts, Funny's movements are tracked by the Torch and Sun Girl and they determine that Funny's pattern is all around Hugh Haller's apartment. They locate the address of the next closest elderly rich man and arrive just in time to stop Mark from laughing him to death as well. The Torch sends Sun Girl after Mark while he tends to the old man's medication. When he catches up with Sun Girl, she has caught Mark as he was trying to crawl into the basement window of Haller's apartment building. With Mark busted he is sent to jail and sentenced to death. While the Torch and Sun Girl read about it in the papers, Mark finds himself locked in a cell with the guards taking relish in trying to tell him their jokes.
