Incredible Hulk (Vol. 2) #91

Peace in Our Time, Part 4

Not far from the moon, Bruce Banner finds himself trapped on the Godseye satellite after agreeing to help SHIELD destroy the doomsday weapon. Down on the planet's surface, Nick Fury reports to senior military officials on the status of the mission. Unfortunately, the Godseye has adapted Bruce Banner's gamma radiation and mutation, developing, even more, adaptive capabilities putting the Earth at even greater risk than ever before. However, he maintains that the Hulk will be able to stop this device before it detonates the world's nuclear stockpiles.

While at that moment aboard the space station, the Godseye construct demands to know more about Bruce Banner and his mutation. Bruce is about to tell him, when the robot attacks, triggering a transformation into the Hulk. The fight ends up sending both the Hulk and the Godseye crashing down onto the surface of the moon. Just as Fury theorized, the robot tries to replicate the Hulk's mutations, gaining more mass in its robotic body while the space station crumbles to pieces. The two fight it out, however, it cannot handle the exponential increase in gamma radiation and as the Hulk's strength increases, the robot eventually overloads and explodes, destroying both the Godseye and the space station.

With his mission accomplished, the Hulk is brought a SHIELD craft to take him off the moon. Once inside, he tells Fury he will have some explaining to do when suddenly the ship throttles forward. The ship then speeds away from Earth, much to the shock of the SHIELD agents monitoring the craft. When they realize that Fury intended for this to happen, one of the agents asks what happens when the Hulk ultimately returns, Fury says they'll deal with it when it happens and leaves the room. By himself, Fury contacts someone to tell them that their mission is accomplished. Onboard the SHIELD craft, the Hulk begins seeing a recorded message from those responsible for exiling him into space. Their words are apologetic, but tell him that this needs to be done. The Hulk screams as his ship departs into the void of space.

Continuity Notes

  • This is not the real Nick Fury, but a Life Model Decoy. Fury had gone into hiding following the events of Secret War #5. Since then, SHEILD often employed a Fury LMD to hide this fact. This particular LMD is a pawn of the Illuminati as revealed in New Avengers: Illuminati #1.
