Kent Blake of the Secret Service #8

Passage to Peril!

The United States army has been attempting to break through enemy forces in the town of Kuwong but has failed in their past three attempts. Colonel Kruger then calls on his best man, Kent Blake, and stresses the importance to their supply line into North Korea is to take Kuwong. Kent is assigned to take the town and secure it for American forces. He tells Kent that he has 30 minutes to try and destabilize enemy troops before air strikes from the enemy wipes out the American troops.

Soon, Kent poses as a private in a company of soldiers across the battle field, fighting their way into Kuwong. Seeking cover they come across and elderly Korean man who refuses to leave his home, despite the combat that is going on around him. They are given orders to dig in by the overbearing Colonel Carey, who is unaware of Kent's status with G-2 Intelligence. Seeing that the old man is slinking away from the scene, Blake attempts to follow him but is caught by Carey who orders him to stay with the platoon.

When Carey is out of sight again, Kent makes a break for it and follows the old man's trail to a doorway that leads him through an underground tunnel. He sees that the "elderly Korean" is really a Chinese soldier and that he and a few other soldiers are hiding out with a radio, sending information back to their leaders. Kent begins formulating a plan to try and stop them when suddenly he is swarmed by rats. With the furious rodents attacking him, Kent is forced to blow his cover by shooting the rats in order to prevent himself from being eaten alive.

The Chinese soldiers attack, but Kent manages to shoot two of them dead, and disarms the third. He then forces the soldier to radio to his superiors, telling them that the Americans have taken Kuwong and cease their attack. The Chinese soldier does so, but when he thinks Kent is not looking he tries to dive for a gun on the ground, forcing Blake to shoot him dead. As the rats feast on the dead soldiers, Blake leaves the tunnel, tossing a grenade back in as he leaves destroying everything inside. Returning to base, he reports his success back to Colonel Kruger.
