Kid From Texas #1

The Guns of Dan Hawk!

During the battle of the Alamo, Jim Hawk is fighting along side his fellow Texas Rangers when he takes a fatal bullet and dies in the battlefield. News is sent back to his son Dan at Rangers headquarters where the commanding officer calls Dan's father a hero. Dan is taken under the care of Catus, an old family friend who promised Dan's father he would look after the boy should anything happen to him. Over the next few years, Cactus spent his days teaching Dan how to ride a horse and shoot a gun, until Dan became proficient of both. Still a teenager, Dan decided that he wished to follow in his father's footsteps and become a Texas Ranger. However when he arrives at the base he is denied his request due to the fact that he is still too young to join the outfit.

Soon reports of renegade Native Americans on the up rise reach the base and the Texas Rangers are off to face Wassati and his tribe. After the soldiers leave, Dan becomes determined to show the Rangers that he is worthy of their ranks by facing Wassati and his tribe alone. The attack ends with the Native Americans (armed with guns) fleeing the base. Dan and Cactus follow after them to their camp and learn that they are dealing with a trader who is selling them guns. Dan and Cactus then wait until the trader goes to fetch his supply wagon and subdue him, taking the supplies themselves as part of Dan's plan to defeat Wassati and his men.

Dan then goes to the camp and fires at Wassati then races off as the renegade chief and his warriors follow after him. Dan leads them to a ring of gunpowder that Cactus had set for them and surrounds the renegades in a circle of fire, while not far away Cactus is gathering the Rangers to come to help. Caught in the ring of fire, Dan challenges Wassati to a one-on-one duel in exchange for his tribe's surrender and Wassati agrees. Dan easily beasts Wassati in combat and the Native American warriors surrender. Impressed the captain offers Dan a position in the Texas Rangers, however the experience has taught Dan that travelling alone across Texas is the best way he can help the people in the region. Agreeing the captain makes Dan an honorary Texas Ranger and sees him and Cactus on his way. Thus the legend of the Kid From Texas is born.

They then hold up the stage and wait for Blackie and the rest of the gang to come and help them secure the valuables on board. When Blackie and the others arrive, his men inform him how the Kid managed to escape. Being close to the border, Blackie tells his men not to worry about it, however they are suddenly ambushed by the Kid and Cactus who were hiding underneath the wagon the entire time.
