Ms. Marvel (vol. 2) #28

Secret Invasion: The Battle of Manhattan

Credits

Secret Invasion continues from Mighty Avengers #15….

The Earth has been invaded by an army of Super-Skrulls. While making their final stand in Manhattan, Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) is separated from the rest of the Avengers.[1] Surrounded by Skrulls, Carol believes that this is how the world ends, but refuses to surrender until she is dead.[2]

When faced with a Skrull with the powers of the Hulk and the Sentry, she flies it into space so it suffocates in the void. Watching the alien invader die fills Carol with joy, something she is not ashamed of.

She returns to the city and begins employing lethal force on every Skrull that crosses her path. The slaughter reminds Carol of what its like to be a warrior and how much she has denied this part of her for so long. She feels so happy she can cry.

Although she is winning the fight, Carol is paused when she goes to punch one of the Skrulls and it takes on the form of a little girl. The invaders seize on this by assuming human form and losing themselves in a group of bystanders. As she tries to ferret out the Skrulls, they try to amplify the panic by killing one of the people they are hiding among.

Eventually, Ms. Marvel figures that a low level blast, just strong enough to knock the actual bystanders off their feet, will expose the Super-Skrulls hiding in their midst. This idea works, but it frightens the innocent people who begin to fear that she might be a Skrull as well. Carol quickly dispatches the remaining Skrulls and convinces the crowd to calm down so she can lead them to safety. However, before she can, a Skrull with the powers of Giant-Man arrives on the scene. She tells everyone to get to cover, saying that she can handle this.

… Secret Invasion continues in New Avengers #42.
