Ms. Marvel (vol. 2) #29

Secret Invasion: The Battle of Manhattan, Part 2

Credits

Secret Invasion continues from Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four #3

The planet Earth has been invaded by the Skrulls. Returning to New York to get reinforcements for Avengers in the Savage Land, Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) finds herself protecting civilians from the invaders.[1] However, their path is blocked by a Super-Skrull with the powers of Giant-Man. It uses its massive size to collapse part of a building on some of the people she is trying to get to safety.

Furious, she uses her powers to blast one of the creature’s eyes. She then impales it with a radio transmitter and sends it crashing to the ground. With the immediate threat now over, Carol is happy to see SHIELD Agent Dave Sum has arrived on the scene.[2] He tells her that SHIELD command in New York has been compromised by the invaders. Once they are both up to speed on what’s going on, Carol fends off another wave of Skrulls. She then suggests that they go to Stark Tower where they can be safe. Unfortunately, when she flies ahead she discovers that the Avengers headquarters is on lock down after being infected by an alien computer virus.

With a new horde of Super-Skrulls on their way, Carol orders everyone onto a city bus. Dave takes the wheel and drives ahead of them, while Ms. Marvel deals with the first wave. When she battles the alien invaders, she spots one that is rigged with an internal explosive like a Skrull they captured earlier. She grabs it and forces it to detonate, clearing out the rest of the Skrulls in a single blast. Surviving the explosion, Carol then catches up with the bus and lifts it to the only place she can think of that will be secure enough to keep people safe: The Raft Maximum Security Prison.

After they land, Ms. Marvel goes into the prison to make sure that the coast is clear. Inside, she discovers that most of the SHIELD agents stationed here have been slaughtered. She finds a lone survivor who tells Carol that his team was slaughtered by a single Super-Skrull, one that all the others were afraid of!

… Secret Invasion continues in Black Panther (vol. 4) #39.

Continuity Notes

  1. Carol was part of a team that went to the Savage Land at the start of the invasion. See Secret Invasion #1-3.

  2. When Dave questions if Ms. Marvel is a Skrull, she warns him she won’t put up with having a gun pointed at her again. She is referring to Ms. Marvel (vol. 2) #25-27. Dave was told by Tony Stark that Carol may have been replaced by a Skrull. This caused him to point a gun at her.
