Sub-Mariner Comics #40

The Secret Tunnel

The Sub-Marine is visited at his surface home in Florida by a member of the Soviet government who convinces him that the USSR and the United States are working on a joint trade project to build a tunnel from Siberia to Alaska under the Bering Strait, under the auspices that it would open up trade between the two countries. The Sub-Mariner is skeptical but agrees to assist the engineer, Ivan Ivanoff, in the construction of the underwater tunnel using his knowledge of the ocean to assist in the operations. Namor reluctantly agrees to help but after examining Soviet tanks nearby waiting to be transported through the tunnel, the Sub-Mariner realizes that he has been tricked. Sneaking into the office where the plans are kept, Namor then doctors the plans in order to hinder production and resumes pretending to be assisting in the project.

However, Ivan soon realizes that the plans have been doctored and correctly deduces the Sub-Mariner is responsible. He has his men drug Namor's food and has the undersea monarch tossed into a gulag where he is forced to work in the salt mines with other political prisoners. Among the prisoners he meets an American engineer who explains that was forced to design the plans after he was captured in East Berlin. Learning that the American engineer could help Namor sabotage the tunnel before it can be completed, Namor stops pretending to be a helpless prisoner and breaks out of his cell and frees the engineer.

The pair fly to the tunnel where they subdue Ivan Ivanov and doctor his plans once again, with the American posing as the lead engineer of the Russian project. However he is soon discovered, but Namor smashes in and they blast part of the tunnel, trapping the communist agents inside. Not panicking, and believing that they are almost to Alaska, they continue working to construct the rest of the tunnel, only to find that it opens not far from where the tunnel begins and that they are still in Siberia. Exiting the tunnel the Soviet workers are confronted by their leaders who are none to happy and intend to punish them harshly. The Sub-Mariner then returns the American back to the United States to report to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Sub-Mariner and the Icebergs

With reports that ships from the surface world are sailing close to Atlantis, Namor goes to the Emperor and tries to convince him to allow a full scale assault. However, the Emperor refuses to act rashly suggesting to Namor that they stop and see what the surface dwellers want before they attack. Unwilling to be patient, Namor convinces Namora and a number of Atlantean warriors to help him use Aero-Subs to push icebergs around the ships trapping them. Fearing that they will be trapped in the ice, the captain of the ship orders the ice bergs blasted and the resulting blasts rock Atlantis with damage. Namor then returns to the Emperor and tells him what happened, and the furious Emperor decides to attack. However, he decides to engage in sabotage instead and sends Namora up to the ships to wreck them. However, Namora is easily captured by the crew and they send a message down to the Sub-Mariner asking him to talk with them and exchange a release of Namora.

Namor agrees to meet with the captain and learns that he and his crew are only searching for Uranium and seek safe passage through the Sub-Mariner's domain. Namor agrees to allow them safe passage and they release Namora. However, Byrrah is not convinced by this show of peace and decides to take matters into his own hands by trying to plant a bomb on the bottom of the the ships. However he is spotted by the Sub-Mariner who quickly stops Byrrah from destroying the ships. Shortly afterward the captain drops down another message warning Namor of an impending undersea earthquake that will rock Atlantis.

Namor is able to warn the Emperor and evacuate the kingdom in time to avoid a massive slaughter when the earthquake hits. The Sub-Mariner then points out that without the warning from the surface dwellers they would have all died, quelling even Byrrah's doubts about the surface people. With their lives intact, Namor leads his people back into the ruins of Atlantis so that they can rebuild.
