Thor #144

This Battleground Earth!

Credits

Balder and Sif have come to Earth to enlist the aid of Thor to stop the Enchanters' attempt to conquer Asgard. Two of the Enchanters, Bora, and Magnir, and they announce their presence by using their talisman to project an image beckoning them to battle. The two sorcerers have appeared on the street outside of Don Blake’s medical practice and use their power to clear the street. The trio of Asgardians then come down to face their foes.

At that same moment, in Asgard, Odin is watching a wrestling match between two of his subjects. The match is interrupted when the Living Talisman appears and knocks out the two warriors. Knowing that the entity was sent by Forsung, the leader of the Enchanters, the Allfather uses his magic scepter to annihilate the intruder. Forsung then appears and challenges Odin to a duel that will pit their mystical powers against one another. If Forsung wins, he will claim ownership of the Odinsword. Even though this risks the mythical weapon being pulled from its scabbard and triggering Ragnarok, Odin agrees to the duel.

Back on Earth, Thor and his allies charge at the two Enchanters. However, their foes use their magical powers to elevate a section of the street high into the sky, separating Thor from Sif and Balder. Although he is outnumbered, Thor manages to toss Bora off the floating platform. When Magnir attempts to separate Thor from Mjolnir by setting the hammer ablaze, Thor manages to knock his opponent out. This cancels his spell, allowing Thor to reclaim Mjolnir before 60 seconds elapses, thus avoiding reverting back to Don Blake in the middle of battle.

As the battle rages on Earth, Odin and Forsung grab hold on opposite ends of Odin’s scepter. As they channel their mystical might against one another, they both become circled in mystical energies that cause them to shoot into space like a comet. Back on Earth, Sif fears for Thor’s life unaware that Balder is secretly developing feelings for her and envies her love for Thor. When she tries to use her powers to transport them all back to Asgard, Sif is shocked to discover that this power is gone. Moments later, the floating section of the street begins to float back down to the ground. As this happens, Thor and his opponents discover that their powers have disappeared as well. Ignoring this, Thor continues fighting and is soon joined by Balder and Sif. They quickly defeat Magnir and Bora and with the battle wonder Thor wonders what caused them to lose their powers, and vows to find some way to return to Asgard to find out.

The Beginning of the End!

Thor, Fandral, and Hogun continue their endless battle against the demon hordes of Mogul. Although these undead creatures cannot be destroyed, the trio vow to keep on fighting. It’s here that they notice that Volstagg has been missing for some time and wish he could be present to fight by their side. However, they are soon joined by Alibar, a local thief who was originally forced to lead the demons into battle. With the added might of Alibar, the three Asgardians are able to drive back the demon horde who retreat in order to regroup.

Meanwhile, Mogul is heading to the scene of the battle on his flying carpet. He has obtained a jar that contains the deadly spotted plague and he intends to unleash the deadly illness on his foes.

Back on the battlefield, the demons have finished regrouping and begin a new charge. Although they are exhausted, Thor and the others prepare for battle. Luckily, they won’t have to fight as Volstagg arrives with an enchanted rod and annihilates the demons.
