Two-Gun Kid #59

At the Mercy of Wolf Waco!

The Two-Gun Kid rides into the town of Lone Pine to find the locals in a panic now that Fast Draw Gang leader, Wolf Waco, is shooting up the town. The Kid goes into the local saloon where he finds Waco is shooting up the saloon and challenging anyone to try and stop him.

The Kid steps forward and the two fight it out. When Waco starts shooting the Kid takes cover behind the bar. The Kid distracts him by throwing a bottle over the bar and charging Waco. The two brawl but the battle is quickly ended when Waco tosses a lamp causing a fire that begins to spread quickly. While Waco flees the blazing inferno, the Kid goes deeper into the fire to rescue a boy trapped upstairs. The Kid gets the boy out but his hands are horribly burned. When he is treated by the local doctor, he tells the Kid that he cannot use his hands for a few weeks while they heal. Overhearing this is Wolf Waco, who threatens to kill the doctor if the Kid does not agree to go along with him and pretend to be helping him run the town, forcing the Kid to wear gloves to cover up his wounded hands, getting the doctor to check his hands periodically intending to kill the Kid before his hands can heal.

However the doctor double crosses Wolf Waco, convincing him that the Kid's hands are still wounded. When the Kid realizes that his hands have fully healed, he finally stands up to Waco during the train robbery. Easily trouncing Waco in a fight, Wolf asks him why the doctor double crossed him and the Kid explains that the boy he saved in the fire was the doctor’s son.

Guns Blaze on the Tombstone Trail

As the Two-Gun Kid is riding along a trail, he is stalked by two outlaws named Luke Morton and Wyoming Bates, who are trying to make a name for themselves for taking out the Two-Gun Kid. He agrees to come out to face the outlaws, Lunk tells Wyoming to sneak around and attack the Kid from behind. However when Wyoming tries to shoot the Kid from behind, Two-Gun dives down and the bullet strikes Lunk.

The Kid begins to feel woozy, but refuses to give up on stopping Wyoming when suddenly the sheriff comes up from behind Bates and gets the drop on him. When the sheriff and his deputy roundup the two outlaws they go to check on the Two-Gun Kid and find that he has passed out from his injuries.

Continuity Notes

  • Although this story implies that Clay Harder will return in the following issue this is not the case. Two-Gun Kid #60 featured the first appearance of Clay Harder’s successor, Matt Hawk. Hawk became the new Two-Gun Kid. The fate of the original, if he was indeed a real person, remains unrevealed.
