Spider-Man recently had his memory wiped out and was living among a group of homeless people acting as their defender. With is memories coming back, he remembers that Mary — one of the homeless people — was involved in a psychology test being done by Generico. Refusing to unmask for her, Spider-Man instead takes her to the Generico building where he left the Fantastic Four’s Thing. When the arrive there they discover a number of AIM technicians that have been knocked out. They are soon joined by the Thing who says he cleaned out their secret hideout but has been convinced that his appearance killed them. However, the technicians are all alive, only knocked out, making Spider-Man realize that their tests were to make people succumb to utter despair.

By this point, Mary is starting to remember who she was and that she worked as an administrator for the project. She fears that AIM could use the records she kept to learn Spider-Man’s secret identity. Needing to find the device that made Ben and the homeless people hate themselves, they find the sub-basement to the facility. While Spider-Man fights the AIM soldiers there, Mary finds the master computer and destroys all the records, even if it means that Mary and the others will never remember who they really were. Spider-Man can’t believe she was willing to make that sacrifice, but she tells him that Spider-Man is everything and needs to be protected. After all the AIM soldiers are dealt with, Spider-Man discovers that the Thing smashed the prototype weapon in his battle with them, but when he finds the Thing, he has already shaken off the effects of the ray. When Spider-Man tells him what happened and what he should do, the Thing tells Spider-Man that Mary thought he was worth something and the least he can do is live up to that expectation.
