Captain America #235

Captain America #235

To Stalk the Killer Skies!

Surrounded by members of the Neo-Nazi group called the National Front, Captain America and Daredevil evade the blasts from their flame throwers. However, the flames catch on the spilled oil scattered around the abandoned warehouse, setting it ablaze. Doctor Faustus orders his minions to retreat, confident that the two heroes will not make it out alive. With the building coming down around them, Daredevil’s enhanced senses allows them to avoid the worst of the fire and locate a water main to put out some of the flames. The pair then climb out through a hole in the ceiling and narrowly avoid getting crushed when the roof water tower collapses.

As fire crews arrives on the scene, Cap and Daredevil are joined by the police commissioner who asks if they have any leads on where the National Front has gone.[1] As Captain America recounts how he got involved in fighting the National Front, he thinks about how Sharon Carter was brainwashed into joining the Neo-Nazi group. He doesn’t know where she is and fears she may have committed suicide when members of the group were recently captured.[2] It’s here he comes across the remains of a wooden shipping crate with writing on it but can’t make out what it says. Luckily, Daredevil’s extra-sensitive touch is able to read what it once said.

At that moment, Doctor Faustus and the Grand Director have arrived at a private airfield in New Jersey. There, they use the Director’s resemblance to Captain America to get past the guard.[3] There they get access to a blimp which the National Front begins loading with the mind altering gas created by Doctor Faustus. The criminal psychologist intends to release the gas over New York City and make its entire population loyal to him. That’s when Captain America and Daredevil arrive to try and stop them. After a brief battle with members of the National Front, the Grand Director comes out from the blimp holding Peggy Carter at gunpoint.

Cap and Daredevil are forced to stand down until Faustus and the Director get airborne in the blimp. Unwilling to let them go, Captain America races to an old World War I fighter plane. After getting the craft into the air above the blimp, Captain America has Daredevil take the controls while he tries to jump down onto the blimp. Unfortunately, Captain America misjudges his leap and hurtles past the blimp and to the ground below.

Recurring Characters

Continuity Notes

  1. The commissioner is unnamed here. His last name was previously identified as Feingold in Defenders #13.

  2. Sharon was brainwashed into joining National Front in Captain America #231. Steve fears she immolated herself when he confronted her in issue #233. Issue #237 will seemingly confirm his fears, however Captain America #446 reveals that Sharon faked her death so she could work on a deep-cover mission for SHIELD.

  3. The Grand Director was revealed to be the Captain America from the 1950s two issues ago. As explained in Captain America #155, he was a man so obsessed with replacing Steve Rogers that he underwent plastic surgery and legally changed his name so he could adopt his identity. His real name is later revealed to be William Burnside in Captain America #602.
