Force Works #22

Force Works #22

Pain Threshold

Force Works is still reeling from the death of their founder, Iron Man,[1] when they are attacked by versions of Simon Williams and Ultron from future timeline that have come to free their captive ally, Cybermancer.[2]

Recovering from their initial clash with Williams are the Scarlet Witch and Century who are relatively unharmed. They check in with Fisher Todd and Spider-Woman down in the tech lab. There, Fisher tells them that the time portal that Williams and Ultron came through has reactivated and is sucking in everything that isn’t bolted down as the timeline on the other side collapses. Wanda tells Fisher to keep working on shutting the portal down. Spider-Woman then heads up to join them and finds US Agent knocked out on the ground following his fight with Ultron.

Elsewhere in the facility, Cybermancer, Williams, and Ultron break into the holding cell where Cybermancer’s high tech armor was being stored. Unfortunately, someone took it, leading Cybermancer to suspect that it was stolen by her past self, this era’s Suzie Endo. When Ultron wonders why they are even bothering when their own reality is collapsing as they speak. Cybermancer takes them into the atrium and shows them that this world is unspoiled like their home and that they could take it over with ease. That’s when they are confronted by the Scarlet Witch and Century. Wanda appeals to Simon’s past relationship with her. Even though he comes from a different timeline, Wanda says that Force Works can help them find a place in this time if they cease their hostilities.

Cybermancer tells Simon not to trust Wanda, but Simon doesn’t want to listen. He tells the Scarlet Witch that in his timeline she is dead and that there was a massive war that decemated the planet. In order to survive the inhospitable environment, Simon and the others had to become cyborgs, giving up much of their humanity. Meanwhile, robots like Ultron adapted to include organic components so that they could equally function on their dying world.

As they are discussing things Cybermancer suddenly screams in agony because her right arm is beginning to fade from existence. She blames the Scarlet Witch of using her hex powers to some how erase her from existence. Simon demands to know if this is true and his aggressive demeanor prompts Century to attack him to defend the Witch. While they are fighting Wanda tries to aid Cybermancer but she tells her to go away. Soon, Spider-Woman and US Agent arrive and lend Century a hand in fighting Williams and Ultron. In the middle of the battle, Cybermancer completely fades out of existence, prompting Simon and Ultron to stop fighting.

Century deduces that whatever is causing their future timeline to collapse is also erasing them from existence as well. The Scarlet Witch promises to do whatever they can to save Simon and Ultron’s life and they all head down to the lab. There, Fisher is still trying to shut down the portal but nothing is working. With they try to figure out what to do next, Ultron winks out of existence as well. Realizing that he is next and there’s nothing that Force Works can do to stop it, Simon Williams dives into the portal to meet his fate there instead. That’s when Suzie Endo enters the room. She has put on one of the Cybermancer gauntlets and is remotely piloting the rest of the suit. She tells the team that the suit is the last thing to go and commands it to fly through the portal. Moments later there is a massive explosion on the other side of the portal shutting it down for good.

In the aftermath of the crisis, Force Works calls a meeting to discuss their future. Fisher wonders if they should stay together or disband now that Tony is dead. US Agent wants to keep the team going, figuring that’s what Stark would have wanted. However, the rest of the team want to take some time apart to figure things out. Wanda in particular is planning on heading back east with Hawkeye to check in on the Avengers and the new teenaged Tony Stark.[3] Spider-Woman would like to tag along since Moonraker is still recovering at Avengers Mansion and she’d like to see him as well.[4] That’s when Suzie Endo enters the room and tells them that she needs a ride to the airport as she is leaving as well.

That’s when PLATO interrupts the meeting and tells the group that the Crisis Computer has picked up an alert in Washington State. Rather than pawn it off on the Avengers, the team decide to head out on one last mission together. As they take off in the hex-jet, Suzie asks PLATO if they’ll be all right. The AI figures that regardless of if they remain together or split up after this, the members of Force Works will be more than okay.[5]

Recurring Characters

Force Works (Scarlet Witch, US Agent, Spider-Woman, Century), Fisher Todd, Suzie Endo, PLATO, Cybermancer, Simon Williams-9528, Ultron-9528

Continuity Notes

  1. The facts surrounding the death of Tony Stark are a lot more complicated than they are presented here. The details:

  2. Cybermancer, Simon Williams, and Ultron all come from a future timeline that is about 14 years ahead of the present day (per Force Works #18). Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z #3 indexes her future as Reality-9528.

  3. To combat the rogue Iron Man, the Avengers went back in time and recruited his younger self to help them fight him in Avengers: Timeslide #1. This young Stark ended up being stranded in the present day there after and will continue operating as Iron Man until Onslaught: Marvel Universe #1. For more on Wanda’s return to the Avengers see Avengers #396.

  4. Moonraker first appeared in Force Works #16, making the entire believe he had been there for months and that he was in a long term relationship with Spider-Woman. This is all bullshit because it was part of Immortus’ deception. At any rate, Moonraker was captured by “Kang’s” forces and tortured in War Machine #22, Iron Man #324 and Avengers #394. He is last seen in the Avengers med-bay in Avengers #397, then never to be seen again. Since he was a Space Phantom acting a role to sell Immortus’ fraud, he was likely recalled back to Limbo when he was no longer needed.

  5. Force Works for sure disbands after this story. Their final mission in Washington State remains undocumented as of this writing in November, 2022. From here…

    • The Scarlet Witch, as stated above, returns to the Avengers starting in Avengers #396.

    • Spider-Woman would return to New York City and be seen again in Sensational Spider-Man Annual 1996.

    • US Agent will disappear for a while. He’ll turn up again back in his original costume in Avengers (vol. 3) #1-3 when every living Avenger at the time was assembled to fight Morgan le Fay.

    • Century: Will go MIA for a very long time, not appearing again until New Avengers Annual (vol. 2) #1 and Avengers Annual (vol. 2) #1, when he joins Wonder Man’s Revengers.

    • Suzie Endo: Will eventually take on the role of Cybermancer and will be next seen getting busted for violating the Super Human Registration Act in Civil War: Frontline #8.

    • As of this writing (November, 2022) neither Fisher Todd nor PLATO have been seen since this story.

    • Force Works doesn’t get back together per-se. A 50-State Initiative team called Force Works will later be formed in Iowa as detailed in Civil War #6. The team isn’t seen or mentioned much after that, only being referenced in Iron Man: Director of SHIELD #33 It, like most other Initiative teams was likely shutdown following Secret Invasion #1-8.
