Kid Colt has come to the local land office to have a piece of gold examined. The officer confirms that the sample is pure gold. As he is making the grade, two outlaws come barging in to steal it. When they ask Kid Colt where the rest of the gold is located, the Kid says he has the directions written down on a map. However, this is all a distraction to make a quick draw for his guns. He then runs the two thieves out of town. As Kid Colt gets on his horse, the clerk asks if he’s going to stake his claim, that’s when Kid Colt tells him that it would only tip off the thieves and besides, he’s not the man who made the strike.

Later, Kid Colt meets up with Sam Kendal, the elderly prospector that found the gold strike. He explains that he didn’t register the claim because of the two thieves who were hanging around and they need to think of something. The pair decide to lay a trap for the thieves by laying a fake claim near Mule Creek. Sure enough, when the Kid returns to town to file the fake claim, the thieves are listening in by a window and rush to the fake dig. Sam Kendal surrenders it to them without incident. As the thieves begin to dig they find what they think is gold and when they try to cross a nearby river they just barely make it across because their wagons are too weighed down. This allows Kid Colt get the jump on them and take them in for claim jumping.
