Peace in Our Time Part Three

The Hulk had agreed to go into space to destroy the Godseye satellite on behalf of Nick Fury, under the auspices that it was a doomsday weapon created by the terrorist organization known as Hydra. However, as he is being attacked by the station's self-defense systems, the Hulk notices a SHIELD emblem on the side of the space station and becomes furious over the fact that he had been so easily fooled. Back on Earth, the situation is being monitored by SHIELD. When one of the operatives expresses his concerns about the mission, Fury is certain that the Hulk and his unrelenting fury will be enough to destroy the weapon before it can destroy the Earth.

Meanwhile, back in Earth orbit, the Hulk struggles against the tentacles that the space station has unleashed to try and subdue him. The sheer number of coils soon overpower the Hulk, and he is soon incapacitated when one pierces his brain. As the Hulk is being pulled into the space station, SHIELD loses their satellite feed and pick up readings that indicate that the Godseye weapon systems are powering up. Nick Fury demands immediate contact with the Pentagon so he can warn them to expect the worst while he activates the second team. Soon, some high orbit SHIELD crafts head to intercept the space station as it passes over the dark side of the Moon. However, the second team's radios are cut off by the Godseye and they are quickly destroyed by the defense systems before Fury can order them to pull back. With the situation deteriorating rapidly, Fury has to deal with the President and has to explain that not only is the situation growing more out of control, but he has also lost sight of the Hulk.

Bruce Banner wakes up aboard the space station in human form and begins exploring the facility. He finds the mummified corpses of SHIELD agents who were co-opted into the creation of the Godseye station. While on Earth, the SHIELD operatives monitoring the situation have noticed that the energy signature of the satellite has suddenly changed to match that of gamma radiation. While aboard the space station, Banner looks around for any signs of life. However, he finds none. Suddenly, he hears something metallic coming his way. Trying to pick up a weapon off the floor, he finds that it has been co-opted by the Godeye. Soon he is confronted by a massive mechanical form. When Bruce asks who it is, the creature responds by mimicking Banner's questions...

Continuity Notes

  • This is not the real Nick Fury, but a Life Model Decoy. Fury had gone into hiding following the events of Secret War #5. Since then, SHIELD often employed a Fury LMD to hide this fact. This particular LMD is a pawn of the Illuminati as revealed in New Avengers: Illuminati #1.
