Lightning Comics (Vol. 2) #2
Doctor Nemesis
Doctor Riley has a date for the evening and decides to trick his colleague, James Bradley, to take over his night shift by telling him a story about his grandmother being sick. Sympathetic, James agree to take the shift and is soon called on ambulance duty. They are called to a home where a man is said to have been badly burned.
When they arrive on the scene the man is already bandaged. Although the situation is very strange to James, he and the driver take the burn victim and his friend aboard the ambulance. That’s when the pull guns and it turns out the burn victim is not injured at all. In reality they are foreign spies on the run and they are hijacking the the ambulance in order to make a getaway.
They have the driver take them to a roadhouse on the outskirts of town. There Doctor Bradley and the ambulance driver are knocked out and tied up. The two spies go inside to prepare the next part of their getaway. Luckily, Doctor Bradley rolled with the blow and wasn’t totally knocked out. Reviving a short time later, he breaks free from his bonds and rushes to the ambulance where he finds that his equipment hasn’t been stolen.
Changing into Doctor Nemesis, James goes peaking into the windows of the building. Interestingly he discovers his co-worker, Doctor Riley on a date with a woman instead of nursing his sick grandmother. Realizing that she is in with the spies, Doctor Nemesis crashes their date and to prove his claims he injects the woman with his truth serum. Sure enough, the woman admits that she is a spy working with the other two men who kidnapped James and the ambulance driver. He then tells Riley to call the police while he looks for the other spies.
Doctor Nemesis overhears how they are about to leave in the ambulance and sneaks inside the vehicle and hides under the stretcher. Thanks to a call to the police, a roadblock is set up and the spies are caught in it. When they threaten to shoot the police officers, Doctor Nemesis helps the cops round up the spies and once they are all under arrest he slips away into the night. The next day, Doctor Bradley enjoys watching Riley squirm when he suggests that he saw a man who looked just like him down at the roadhouse. Riley makes an excuse and walks away in embarrassment and decides not to trick people in doing his job again.
