As Nova flies across the city, Wolverine finds himself stuck taking a city bus in order to catch up with Spider-Man and a new and dangerous mutant named Paul Patterson. He’s not very happy about it and shouts at the passenger sitting next to him who is worried about Logan bleeding on him.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man has made the grisley discovery that Paul’s father has been dead and rotting in his room for quite some time. When Spider-Man asks if Paul killed his father, the youth admits that it was the first thing he did when his powers manifested. He insists that it was an accident and that he was trying to show his powers to his father. When Spider-Man tells him that they can’t leave his father like this, or allow Paul to live alone. That’s when Paul reveals that he actualy enjoyed killing his father and decides to try using his powers to kill a superhero this time. Needless to say, this causes Spider-Man’s spider-sesne to go off. By this time, Wolverine has gotten off the bus and is still in a sour mood because the passengers were acting like they never saw a superhero before.[1] As Wolverine makes his way up to Paul’s house, he is struck by Spider-Man as he is blasted out of the house. Surprisingly, the pair take the opportunity to apologize and agree to work together instead of fighting each ther.

That’s when Paul blows up his house and tells the two heroes that he learned that he becomes more powerful every time he uses his powers and that he can control them pretty well now. As Spider-Man and Wolverine evade Paul’s blasts, the web-slinger asks Wolverine for any insights he has. Logan explains that when Cerebra first picked up Patterson, they thought it was a glitch due to the power reading. Paul becomes more and more powerful as the fight contunes, forcing Spider-Man and Wolverine on the defensive as they try and figure out how to deal with this out of control mutant.

At that moment, in Latveria, there is a sudden flash of enery in the field causing the sudden materialization of someone who appears to be Doctor Doom. Strugging to his feet, this man curses Reed Richards.[2]

Back in New York, Spider-Man and Wolverine continue getting battered around by Paul Patterson. Wolverine thinks that maybe his adamantium claws could disrupt the boy’s powers. By this point, Spider-Man is willing to try anything since Paul has grown bored with attacking them and has begun turning his powers on the other homes in the neighborhood. After Spider-Man and Wolverine get the locals to safety, they try to fight Paul again, but are once again put on the defensive.[3] While Spider-Man distracts Paul, Wolverine manages to get close enough to slide one of his claws through his arm. This causes Paul to seemingly explode. With the battle seemingly over, Wolverine decides that this threat is bigger than the X-Men and decides its time to call in SHIELD. Spider-Man is impressed that Logan has a direct line to Nick Fury and when he asks for it, Logan declines to give it out. Moments later, Dum Dum Dugan arrives with SHIELD agents and Spider-Man decides to it’s time to head out.[4]

Later, Wolverine returns to the X-Mansion where he runs into Jubilee who tells him that she is moving back to Los Angeles to live with her aunt is glad to see Logan before she leaves. He tells her goodnight even though it’s 8 am in the morning. Later that day, Peter Parker is having lunch with his fellow teachers. Jean Bradley is talking about Paul Patterson’s rampage while Peter struggles to stay away after being up all night fighting Paul as Spider-Man.

At that same moment, a number of probes return to a ship that is stuck in the side of a building. Inside, a massive Skrull named Titannus. Watching footage of Spider-Man and Wolverine’s battle with Paul Patterson, the alien decides that they will not suit his needs. He then turns to his love, Amissa, who is in a state of stasis. He assures her that he will amass an army to help them achieve his goals and vows that for their future he will not fail her.

Recurring Characters

Spider-Man, Wolverine, Paul Patterson, Jean Bradley, “Doctor Doom”, Titannus, Nova, Dum-Dum Dugan, Jubilee

Continuity Notes

  1. Wolverine complains about Cyclops’ decision for the X-Men to start wearing costumes again. For a time, the X-Men abandoned their usual colorful costumes in favor of black leather outfits, Logan included, in New X-Men #114. At the time of this story, Cyclopes had decided that the X-Men were to wear costumes again so people would associate them with other superheroes, as seen in Astonishing X-Men (vol. 3) #1.

  2. This is not actually Doctor Doom as we’ll learn in issues #3 and 4. This is actually Tony Stark from another reality. Per Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z #2 this reality is designated as Earth-5012.

  3. Paul gloats about the Avengers disbanding and thinks Thor must be rolling in his grave. At the time of this story, the Avengers disbanded following the events of Avengers #500-503. Thor seemingly perished in Thor (vol. 2) #85. However, Thor will return in Thor (vol. 3) #1.

  4. Wolverine and Spider-Man have an exchange here where Logan is surprised to know that Spider-Man is married. Spider-Man quips about how Logan has seen him without his mask on. The facts:

    • At the time of this story, Peter is married to Mary Jane Watson. However, not long after this, their marriage is ereased from existence by Mephisto in Amazing Spider-Man #545. In the new timeline, Peter would refer to Mary Jane as his fiancee instead of his wife.

    • Logan has known Spider-Man’s secret identity since Spider-Man Versus Wolverine #1.
