Miss America Primer
Series Overview
Miss America Comics started off as a solo book that featured stories about Miss America. After the first issue it was retitled Miss America Magazine, and on top of Miss America stories it featured articles about romance, fashion, and celebrities that appealed to girls of the era. The second issue also introduced Patsy Walker, who started off as a teen comedy/romance title in the same vein as Archie, more on Patsy later. As superheroes became less popular, Miss America was phased out of her own damn title by issue #5. The series continued in the magazine format until 1952 rebooting its numbering every once and a while. Thee series was retitled Miss America and started its numbering as though Miss America Magazine never rebooted its numbering. By that point the series returned to a comic book format and Patsy Walker and her supporting cast.
The Thing About Patsy
Patsy Walker started making appearances in the Marvel Universe proper starting in Fantastic Four Annual #3. In 1976 she became the superhero known as Hellcat in Avengers #144. It was later revealed in Defenders #89 that the Patsy Walker comics of the 40s and 50s were just that, comic stories, penned by Patsy’s mother. It was inspired by her teenage daughter and her friends but depicted them in a wholesome way and created a media empire based on the stories. As such, the old Patsy Walker stories are not considered part of Marvel canon. Unlike other Timely stories which, the majority of, are said to be fictional stories based on “real” events.
Index Scope
This index will only be covering the Miss America stories that were featured in the first five issues of the title. It should come to no surprise to you, dear reader, that I give zero fucks about all the fashion/romance/celebrity crap that is in these comics. I may come back and write summaries of the Patsy Walker stories but that’s once I’ve covered so many other things that are of far more significance. So check back sometime around 2037 or so.
