Giant-Size Ms. Marvel #1
Moment of Carlity
Now
Carol Danvers is woken up by her alarm at 6:45 in the morning. Getting out of bed and looking out her balcony she sees that New York City has been restored to normal following the Scarlet Witch’s reality warp.[1] Days ago, Carol was living her best life in a world where mutants were the dominant species and the world was ruled by the House of M, led by Erik Magnus (aka Magneto) and his family.
Earlier
There she was the most famous and popular non-mutant superhero, Captain Marvel. Her primary foe was England’s Sorcerer Supreme, Warren Traveler. She remembers her last clash with him before everything was changed back. He had ambushed her after saving two children from a burning building. One of his more annoying spells was his ability to shift forward and backward in time by a few seconds making it easy for him to ambush you. This time, rather than an elaborate plan, Traveler had just come to kill Carol so that she wouldn’t interfere with his future plans.
Although Traveler knocked her back into the burning building, Captain Marvel evaded most of his attacks until he had her pinned in a dead end. It is then that Carol noticed that a cat is trapped inside the burning building. With nothing available to stop her foe, Danvers took a risk and threw the cat at Warren mid-spell. This caused the cat to start clawing at the sorcerer’s face and in a panic he used his time travel spell, teleporting himself and the feline away. As firefighters arrived on the scene to put out the blaze, Carol waited for Traveler to re-appear as he always does. This time, however, the magician doesn’t come back she waits and waits. Eventually she gives up by the time the fire is put out. After getting the time from one of the fire men, she realizes that she is running late for an important event and flies off.
This is in Washington, DC, where Carol’s publicist Sarah Day is furious that Carol is running late this is a press conference about her. 20 minutes after the event, Carol is signing autographs when she is approached by the mutants Scott Summers, Emma Frost, and Lyla Miller. They told her that this reality isn’t their own and Lyla was able to awaken Carol’s memories of the true reality. From there, she joined the Avengers and X-Men in undoing the House of M and restoring reality to the way it should be.
Now
Thinking back on the experience, Carol can’t help but be amazed at how popular she was. In that reality, Captain Marvel was a successful superhero who realized her own potential. Carol now finds herself wondering if she can actually become that other person and decides to give it her best shot.
