New Avengers: Disassembled, Part 4
Civil War continues from Captain America (vol. 5) #23…
The superhero community finds itself split in half over the recent passage of the Super Human Registration Act (SHRA). While the pro-registration side (led by Iron Man, aka Tony Stark) and those against (led by Captain America, aka Steve Rogers), the Sentry (Bob Reynolds) finds himself conflicted over which side to support. As both sides clash with one another, Bob thinks about how he could stop this conflict all by himself. He could also easily kill them all, and this gets him pushing intrusive thoughts about the Void out of his mind.[1][2][3]
In order to get away and think, the Sentry flies to the moon where he can ponder his dilemma uninterrupted, or so he thinks. Not long after his arrival he is approached by the Inhuman Royal Family, who live there. Bob dimly remembers fighting along side them in the past against the Red Ronin.[4] That’s when Gorgon and an army of Inhumans attack him. The Sentry is easily able to fend them off, wishing they would just leave him alone. Once his attackers have been subdued, Crystal approaches and hands him a bag. Inside, is a replica of Black Bolt’s headdress and Bob figures out that he is being summoned to meet the King of the Inhumans.
Heading into Attilan, he meets with Black Bolt and his wife, Medusa. Speaking for her husband, she asks the Sentry to explain why he has come to the moon. Bob says he came to think and doesn’t understand why they attacked him. Medusa tells him that the Inhumans are currently at war with the Earth.[5] One of their telepaths scans the Sentry’s mind and Medusa learns of their previous encounter with the Sentry but doesn’t remember it. It’s quickly explained how all memory of the Sentry was erased until recently.[6] After telling the telepath to get out of his mind, he agrees to sit down to dinner with the royal family and explain all of the events that have led up to the civil war going on back on Earth. He explains how Nick Fury went into hiding after his civil war, the depowering of most of Earth’s mutants following the House of M, and the passage of the SHRA.[7]
Black Bolt sits and listen in silence and as the eat, Bob becomes uncomfortably aware of Crystal’s presence. After explaining everything, Medusa tells Bob that he will be permitted to stay the night on the moon as a guest of the Inhumans. Given a room for the night, Bob’s pondering is interrupted once again when Crystal comes by with some food for him. She had the Inhuman telepath tell her about their forgotten encounter with the Sentry and came to talk to him about the feelings she has had since seeing him again. She has come to confirm if they were once lovers. Bob confirms that this was true and the two are about to kiss. However, Reynolds suddenly remembers his wife — Lindy — back on Earth and stop himself from doing anything.
They are then interrupted by Iron Man (Tony Stark), who has come to bring the Sentry back home. He needs Bob’s power to help with the fight against the resistance. Reynolds tells Tony that he is uncertain about going back because he thinks Captain America will fight until the death.[8] Tony doesn’t believe it will come to that, and admits that this conflict is hard on everybody. Tony admits that he might not see the end of it alive, but knows that he is fighting on the right side of history and implores Bob to join his side.[9] They are interrupted by the rest of the Inhuman royal family who are not the least bit happy that Iron Man has entered their sanctuary unannounced. Tony assures them that he had only come to bring his friend home. Despite Gorgon’s chest pounding, Medusa allows Stark and Reynolds to leave without incident. However, she warns them that if people from Earth trespass again, they will rue the day. As they leave, the Inhuman’s telepath, Fhyty, tells them that he sees a vision of the future and none of the heroes on Earth are prepared for what will happen next.

Continuity Notes
The SHRA was a law that mandated that superhumans had to register with the government following the Stamford Disaster, a superhuman conflict that killed hundreds of innocent people in Civil War #1. After the law passed in issue #3, those who support the new law have been clashing with those against it. The Sentry has fled during the first major clash between the two sides in Civil War #4. This law will remain in the books until Siege #1-4.

The man who appears to be Daredevil in this story is actually Iron Fist in disguise. In Civil War: Choosing Sides #1, Matt Murdock asked Iron Fist to pose as his alter ego. This is because, at the time of this story, Murdock had been sent to prison after a federal investigation into the revelation that he was secretly Daredevil all these years. See Daredevil (vol. 2) #32 and 76-87.
Another impostor is Yellowjacket, who was replaced by a Skrull spy named Citri Noll, as will be revealed in Secret Invasion #3. As per Mighty Avengers #15, Noll took thew place of the real Hank Pym prior to the events of House of M #1.
The Sentry is mentally ill with his illness manifesting as a dark entity called the Void, as explained in Sentry #1-5 and Sentry/The Void #1. As per Sentry (vol. 2) #1-8, the Void is the manifestation of his traumatic childhood which included abuse and drug addiction. The Sentry seemingly dealt with the Void once and for all in New Avengers #7-10. We’ll find out that is not the case in Sentry volume 2.
The Sentry’s memory of fighting Red Ronin with the Inhumans is depicted in the form of a comic book. Per Official Index to the Marvel Universe: Avengers, this incident occurred between the events of Godzilla #15 and 17. To date (April, 2024), the details of this encounter have yet to be told.
The Inhumans are in a cold war with the Earth after Quicksilver (estranged husband of Crystal) stole some Terrigen Crystals that later fell in the hands of the US government, as seen in Son of M #1-6. This conflict will come to a head in Silent War #1-6.
It was revealed in New Avengers #9 that the Sentry’s old foe the General hired Mastermind to use his powers to erase all memory of the Sentry. This plagued Bob for years until recently.
Nick Fury went into hiding after it was revealed he launched an unauthorized attack on the nation of Latveria, as seen in Secret War #1-5. Not long after this, the Scarlet Witch briefly altered all reality to make Earth a world where mutants were the superior race. Ultimately, she changed everything back and — seeing mutants are the real problem — removed the x-gene from existence and depowered most living mutants, as seen in House of M #1-8.
The Sentry’s prediction proves to be correct, after surrendering in Civil War #7, Captain America is seemingly killed by an assassin’s bullet in Captain America (vol. 5) #25. However, this death will be proven to be short lived as seen in Captain America: Reborn #1-6.
Tony alludes to his struggles with alcoholism, something that was first explored in Iron Man #128.
Topical References
Tony makes reference to drinking a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black. This is a real world brand of Irish whiskey. Its reference here should be considered a topical reference.
