Quicksilver #2
The Wrong Day to Start a New Life!
As the world is being pounded by torrential rain across the globe, Quicksilver and the High Evolutionary’s Knights of Wundagore — Sir’s Ram and Delphis, Lord’s Anon, Tyger, Churchill, and Crock, and Lady’s Ursula and Vermin — set up operations in a castle in upstate New York.[1] They have fled the Citadel of Science because it was invaded by the Acolytes, zealots that believe in mutant supremacy according to Magneto, the man everyone believes to be Pietro’s father.[2] There, they are reunited with Quicksilver’s daughter Luna and her caretaker, Bova the cow-woman.
The group spends time looking around the facilities and discover that the basement lab has been flooded. This is more than fine for Delphis, the resident scientist, who prefers a watery environment anyway. While the others head to bed, Quicksilver is asked by Sir Ram to participate in some sword wielding practice. This is an excuse for Sir Ram to impress upon Pietro the importance being a leader to the Knights of Wundagore is and a stern warning not to shirk his duty. Taking advantage of the fight with his super-speed, Quicksilver promises Sir Ram that he is up to the task.
Meanwhile, in New York City, the other dimensional amazon known as Thundra has appeared in the middle of a street. and is going on the rampage.
Later that evening, Delphis has had a chance to run some data on the strange weather patterns pounding the globe and a meeting with the other Knights is called. He shows them the information and believes that what they are witnessing is some kind of spatial upheaval that might be linked to the similar sort experienced during the Onslaught event. However, he cannot determine what effect it will have on nearby New York City without getting in for a closer look. Pietro is also curious about the phenomena and suggests that they all go an an expedition into the city to find out.
When they arrive in New York not only do they find the bizarre sight of a pterodactyl flying in the sky, but they also spot Thundra rampaging in the streets. The Knights try to subdue the flying creature by Lord Tyger, Churchill and Lady Vermin all get snagged by the flying dinosaur. Quicksilver, meanwhile, remembers her the files the Avengers keep on her.[3] He tries to get her to stop attacking and talk about how she got back on Earth, but the warrior woman has gone completely berserk and won’t listen to reason. When he fights back, Thundra’s lover Arkon arrives on the scene astride of the flying pterodactyl and threatens Quicksilver with death for striking his chosen mate.[4]

Continuity Notes
At the time of this story, Quicksilver is recording audio diaries addressed to his wife, Crystal. He believes that Crystal and his sister the Scarlet Witch are believed to have died along side members of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four in Onslaught: Marvel Universe #1. They were actually transported to a pocket dimension where they have been living reimagined versions of their past lives. They will be found and returned to their proper reality in Heroes Reborn: The Return #1-4. In fact, the storm in this issue is caused by the events of that story and are heralding their return.
In this story, Quicksilver is repeatedly referred to as both a mutant and the son of Magneto. Their relationship is incredibly complicated:
Pietro has been led to believe this since Vision and the Scarlet Witch #4.
However, years later, both of these facts are revealed to have been lies. In Uncanny Avengers #4-5, it is revealed that Pietro was kidnapped as an infant by the High Evolutionary. In order to cover up his experiments he made it so Pietro would register as a mutant.
In Scarlet Witch (vol. 2) #3 it is revealed that his mother is actually Natalya Maximoff. The identity of his biological father (as of this writing) remains unrevealed.
A footnote here reminds readers that Thundra was last seen in Avengers #358-359.
In case you’re late to the party, Arkon and Thundra have been an item after going to war against one another in Avengers West Coast #75.
Topical References
Delphis records the data on the strange weather phenomena on a CD. At the time this story was published, compact discs were a commonly used to store data. While they still exist they aren’t as widely used due to the advent of more advanced mediums of data storage, making the technology on the bring of obsolescence. As such its appearance here should be considered topical.
The original twin towers of the World Trade Center are depicted as part of the New York City skyline in this story. This should be considered a topical reference as these buildings were destroyed in a terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 and subsequently replaced with the new Freedom Tower.
