Jessica Drew wakes up in pain after her brawl with a Skrull infiltrator and discovers that she has been locked up in a Madripoor jail. Getting up off her cot she decides breaking out isn’t such a smart idea, and after wondering if she killed the Skrull she was fighting calls out for someone to come to her cell. She waits patiently knowing the authorities are watching and trying to figure out what to do with her since waiting her out won’t break her since she has been trained by both SHIELD and Hydra.

That’s when Detective Chong comes down to her cell to talk to her. She is taken to an interrogation room where Jessica is asked why she is in Madripoor. Seeing her bio scanner and SWORD cell phone, she wants them back. She is honest when she says the bioscanner helps her detect aliens and tires to convince the detective that her phone is just a phone. Chen isn’t sold on this, because Jessica smuggled herself into the country with fake credentials to kill an alien creature. He has no intention of letting her go and has already contacted Norman Osborn who is sending HAMMER operatives to extradite her from the country.[1]

Realizing that she’s stuck, Jessica then uses her pheromones to enthrall Detective Chong who suddenly becomes very agreeable and helps her leave the police station. However, when they get down to the parking garage the detective is shot in the head by a car souped up with various weapons. Jessica tries blasting the vehicle with one of her venom blasts, but it peels off. She thinks its a Skrull at first and as she chases the car to the upper level of the parking garage she changes her assessment and figures that it must be one of SHIELD’s flying cars. That’s when more officers arrive and order Jessica to surrender. That’s when the window of the car rolls down and the driver begins opening fire, mowing down the cops. Jessica then realizes that she’s actually dealing with Hydra. With the cops dead, Madame Hydra emerges from the car and tells Jessica to give her mother a hug.[2]

Recurring Characters

Spider-Woman, Hydra (Madame Hydra)

Continuity Notes

  1. Spider-Woman was replaced by Veranke, a Skrull queen behind an invasion of Earth in Giant-Size Spider-Woman #1. Jessica was freed during the events of Secret Invasion #1-8. Her impostor was killed by Norman Osborn who was then made director of SHIELD, which he promptly rennamed HAMMER.

  2. Madame Hydra, aka Viper, is not actaully Jessica Drew’s mother. Per Spider-Woman #42-44, at one point Viper was manipulated into thinking she was Jessica Drew’s mother. It was later revealed in Captain America #281-283 that this was due to a spell cast upon her by the demonic entity known as Chthon. Why she suddenly thinks she is Jessica’s mother again here is explained away as some form of mental illness next issue.
