Thor #194
This Fatal Fury!
Loki has taken control of Asgard with the Odin-Ring and intends to make Sif his bride. His only opposition has come from his step-brother, Thor. Separated from Mjolnir, Thor is now in the grasp of a Storm Giant and is struggling to get free before he reverts back to his mortal form of Don Blake. Sif pleads with Loki to spare her beloved’s life, but they fall on deaf ears.
After Loki and Sif leave, Thor does revert back to Don Blake. However, the sudden flash of lightning that triggers the transformation startles the Storm Giant to drop Don Blake. This allows the lame doctor to race to Mjolnir. Upon touching the enchanted hammer, he transforms into Thor once more. With his renewed powers, Thor summons a massive whirlwind to send the Storm Giants flying away. Entering the palace he is stopped at the gates by an army of trolls which he begins fighting through. As Thor battles for his life, the other warriors of Asgard watch, wishing they could help , but are unable due to their bond to the orders of Loki, who is now the law of Asgard.
In another room, the wedding ceremony begins and Sif is being led to the royal throne where Loki now sits. The trickster god suddenly feels a wave of pain through his entire body. Once it has passed he dismisses it as nothing. Watching from the sidelines are the Warriors Three who have had enough of this farce. Before they can act, they are attacked by an army of trolls who have been ordered to prevent their interference. As this battle rages, Thor manages to force his way into the throne room and interrupt the wedding. Also watching are Balder and Karnilla. Although Balder can’t help but love Karnilla, his pledge to her makes him feel like a traitor since he cannot help his friend.
Meanwhile, the Warriors Three force their way into Odin’s bedchamber where the All-Father has been forced go into the Odinsleep since Loki usurped the throne. When Hogun awakens Odin, he is furious that they have woken him up. When the Warriors Three explain the current state of affairs, Odin shocks them by saying there is nothing he can do as Loki is in command.
In the other room, Loki clashes with Thor and has the advantage as the Odin-Ring increases his strength. However, the searing pain strikes the trickster gone again and Loki realizes that the Odin-Ring’s power is slowly killing him. Losing all interest in ruling Asgard, Loki tosses away the ring which is picked back up by Odin. The All-Father then banishes Loki and his minions from Asgard. Odin then explains that his inaction during this whole affair was yet another lesson in humility for Thor as he knew that Loki would not be able to endure the power of the Odin-Ring for long.
That’s when Odin’s vizier comes racing into the room to tell Odin of some dire news. They retreat to the All-Father’s private chambers where Odin looks into a vision pool. It holds an image of Loki on an alien world laughing manically. Odin recognizes the world Loki has been banished to and curses himself for acting so rashly as Loki will awaken the one thing that will bring about the destruction of Asgard.
